Volvo is known for its commitment to safety, yet even its vehicles are not immune to the recall process. Over the last few years, Volvo has recalled some of its best selling cars and SUVs, including the XC90, XC60 and V60 series vehicles.

In 2016, Volvo issued two major recalls, both relating to safety systems. The first involved 74,027 cars and SUVs including the 2016-2017 XC90, XC60, S90, V60, V60 Cross Country, S60 and S60 Inscription. These vehicles were part of a campaign to inspect and replace a loose front seatbelt attaching stud that may allow the seatbelt to separate from the attaching bracket. As of January 2018, the completion rate for this recall stood at 93.4 percent. The second involved nearly 44,000 2016-2017 XC90 and S90 vehicles that may have an improperly installed air conditioning drain hose. Should water from the hose leak into the passenger compartment, it could affect airbag deployment as well as other crucial electrical systems. As of January 2018, 91.6 percent of affected vehicles had been inspected and repaired.

Seatbelts again became the focus of a recall involving the 2017 XC90. Some 1,305 SUVs were recalled due to an issue with a part used in the third-row seatbelt retractor. Although the seatbelt will work as designed in an accident, the part in question could detach after impact and become a projectile. The completion rate for this repair as of January 2018 was 69.2 percent.

In 2017, Volvo issued two recalls related to side curtain airbags. The first involved 10,476 2017 XC90, S90 and V90 Cross Country vehicles. A set of bolts securing the side airbag curtain may break, resulting in the airbag deploying improperly. The completion rate for this repair stands at 92.9 percent. The second recall involved the 2017 S60, S60 Cross Country, V60, V60 Cross Country and XC60. The side airbag inflator initiators that may fail to ignite, resulting in the airbags failure to deploy. To date, nearly 90 percent of the affected vehicles have been completed.
