Smart has had a few recalls in recent years, including issues pertaining to steering, brakes and headlights. As Smart is owned by German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, all recalls are issued through MBUSA.

In 2018, Mercedes-Benz recalled 42,781 Smart Fortwo Coupe and Cabrio vehicles. Over time, an insulation mat in the engine compartment may deform or deteriorate, coming in contact with the hot exhaust pipe and possibly causing a fire.

Three recalls were issued for Smart cars in 2017, the first involving 110 2017 Smart Fortwo. A left front axle steering knuckle may fail, which in turn could result in loss of steering control leading to a crash. As of May 2018, the completion rate for this recall stood at 57.2 percent. Another recall was issued for a lock nut that secures the parking brake cable. Should this nut come loose, the parking brake lever travel may increase to the point where the parking brake can no longer securely hold the vehicle in place. As of May 2018, the completion rate for this repair was 56.8 percent. Finally, a 2017 recall was issued regarding the 2016 Smart Fortwo’s horizontal headlight adjustment mechanism. Adjusting screws may have been sealed off at the factory, preventing future headlight adjustments. The completion rate as of January 2018 was 52.1 percent.

In 2015, Mercedes-Benz recalled 5,058 2014-2015 Fortwo Coupe and Cabrio vehicles. The affected cars have steering gear mounting bolts that could break during vehicle operation, leading to loss of steering control and possibly a crash. As of October 2016, the completion rate for this recall was 81.8 percent.
