Smart is a German automotive manufacturer that is a division of Daimler AG. A builder of micro cars and subcompacts, it is probably the tiniest “World car” in existence today. The results of a cooperative agreement between the Swatch group (Maker of watches from the Swatch Brand all the way up to the prestigious Omega watch) and Mercedes, the company was founded in 1994.

Smart has previously built gasoline powered vehicles for sale around the world. That continued in the United States up until the end of the 2017 model year. After that time gasoline powered vehicles would be discontinued with the brand focusing on all electric models beginning in the 2018 model year. Both Smart Coupe and Smart Cabrio models would be sold as battery-electric vehicles. The Smart Fortwo Cabrio Electric Drive is the only electric convertible for sale in the U.S.

The Smart Fortwo Coupe and Cabrio ED cars are equipped with a Mercedes-Benz USA basic warranty that extends to 4 years/50,000 miles. These two Smart model’s power units are covered by a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty that covers electrical components to 8 years and 62,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Smart Maintenance Guidelines

Service A

Smart owners are alerted to upcoming service events via a service message in the instrument cluster display. Two alerts will tell you of upcoming scheduled services. Listed as “Service A,” it occurs after 12 months. After that, Service A occurs every 24 months.

Service B

“Service B” occurs after 24 months, and then every 24 months thereafter.

During these service schedules, there won’t be any oil and oil filter changes because the Fortwo Coupe and Cabrio do not have internal combustion engines which use the oil for cooling and lubrication purposes. Instead your mechanic will replace the brake pads and linings on the front and rear axles, inspect and if necessary, replace the brake fluid, replace the activated charcoal dust filter, the desiccant cartridge, replace the coolant and the 12-volt on-board electrical system battery.

Extended Warranty and Maintenance

A Smart owner can become really smart (sorry) with an optional extended warranty that pushes the plan from 4 years/50,000 miles to 6 years/80,000 miles. It’s the perfect way to keep your Smart covered for an additional two years of bumper-to-bumper service, which generally coincides with the Smart’s high voltage battery limited warranty.

Prepaid Maintenance Plans

Owners may also take advantage of prepaid maintenance for a period of two or three years. Both the Extended Warranty and Pre-Paid service plans can be rolled into the purchase price of the car and paid out within their monthly payments. Prices are variable and can be discussed during the initial purchase at your local smart dealership
