Gmc Maintenance Schedules Q&A

GMC Maintenance Pricing & Schedules

GMC Sierra trucks and crossovers are a slightly upscale alternative to Chevrolet models and while they may appeal to a different customer, like all vehicles, they must be properly maintained. That’s the reason why the GMC Division of General Motors has prescribed a series of maintenance guidelines so owners know when to perform a specific inspection or replacement of a fluid, tires, wipers and other components that make up their vehicle.

GMC Maintenance Guidelines

Owners will be alerted to some aspects of their coverage. For example, GMC’s Engine Oil Life System will alert you within 600 miles of a scheduled 7,500-mile oil change interval. With this feature, a computer looks at a combination of factors including engine rpm, temperature, and miles driven to track the useful oil life that remains. This scheduled service will also include a tire rotation and a multi-point vehicle inspection. Driven under optimal conditions, the oil life may be extended out to 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever comes first. At the same time, we recommend an alignment, which will help reduce uneven tire wear.

The rest of the service schedule comes directly from the GMC Owner’s Manual. Here are just a few examples of service highlights:

7,500 Miles

Every 7,500 miles: At this interval, your GMC mechanic should rotate tires, inspect brake pads and engine air filter, and following the Engine Oil Life System, change the oil and oil filter as necessary.

22,500 Miles

At 22,500 miles: Many of the same tasks as seen at 7,500 miles are repeated here, but they are joined with a replacement of the passenger in-cabin air filter.

30,000 Miles

Oil changes and tire rotations continue through the 30,000- and 37,500-mile range.

45,000 Miles

At 45,000 miles: It’s time for another oil and oil filter change, along with a tire rotation. But GMC changes it up a bit, by adding a replacement of the in-cabin air filter, and an inspection of the evaporative control system. They wrap this service interval up with a replacement of the engine air cleaner filter, and change the transfer case fluid, if your car is equipped with four-wheel drive.

These are all basics that every owner should be aware of. Just remember to keep in mind, the 7,500-mile intervals that appear like clockwork for proper service of your GMC vehicle.

For leased or purchased GMC vehicles from the 2017-2018 model year, the GMC division offers “GMC Pro Grade Protection,” which will provide up to two oil and filter changes, tire rotation and multi-point vehicle inspection. The standard terms of the warranty for your GMC vehicle is 3-years/36,000-mile comprehensive, and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Extended Service/Extended Warranty

GM announced an extended warranty program where GMC will offer coverage that pushes out bumper-to-bumper protection from 3 years/36,000 miles to 5 years/60,000 miles. This extended contract will be offered at the time of sale and the cost, which will range between $1,000 to $2,000 depending on brand and model, can be rolled into the price of the vehicle and financed. If the owner opts for the additional coverage, the extended terms stay with car through subsequent owners. GM stresses that this isn’t a service contract, but rather an extension of the vehicle’s original warranty.

Pre-Paid Maintenance Plus Plan

For owners wanting to expand their coverage, GMC offers a Pre-Paid Maintenance Plus plan which includes the standard maintenance program (Oil and Filter Changes along with tire rotation), and may include air filters, cabin air filters, transmission and transfer fluid changes, and spark plugs. The plans are customizable, depending on your driving style. Different terms and mileage options are available.

At every service, GMC service technicians and mechanics will perform a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection. At this point, they inspect certain aspects of your vehicle including battery condition, wheel alignment and tire wear, brake wear, windshield wiper wear, and connectivity status to OnStar.

For service that extends beyond the traditional three year/36,000-mile service interval, GMC owners can subscribe to the GMC Pre-Paid Maintenance Plus plan with additional coverage for approved repairs. Maintenance plans exist that range from 24-month/30,000-mile to 180- month/150,000-mile plans. If a covered breakdown occurs, you have access to GM certified service technicians at any one of the 4,000-plus GM dealerships nationwide. Towing, road service, trip interruptions, lost keys and lockout coverage provide added value to the plans. Other terms and conditions apply.

The program extends the warranty life of the engine, transmission, drive axle, turbochargers or superchargers, transfer case, steering, braking and air conditioning components along with coverage for all seals and gaskets. The program is transferable to the person that you sell or otherwise transfer your vehicle to. Examine program brochures and contracts for more details.
