Summary

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Buick Regal, 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2010-2013 Buick Lacrosse vehicles sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, or Wisconsin. These vehicles may have rear toe links that received excessive electrocoating (e-coat) corrosion protection, which could cause the e-coat to become brittle and break away when contacted by road debris. Over time, the e-coat may chip away, exposing the metal toe link and making it more susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion may eventually cause the toe link to thin and ultimately to fracture. A rear toe link fracture may reduce the driver’s ability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links and adjuster fasteners free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Owners will be mailed an interim notification on February 15, 2021. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be around March 21, 2021. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is N202308930.

Buick Recall History

]Buick brand sedans including the LaCrosse and the popular-selling Enclave and Encore SUVs have been part of major recall campaigns by GM in the past few years.

In 2014, GM recalled more than 1.1 million midsize SUVs including 2008-13 Enclave for issues with side airbag wiring harnesses that could lead airbags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in a crash. The fix is replacing parts. GM said the recall completion rate for the total vehicle population as of June 2018 is 94.6 percent.

That same year, the automaker recalled 3.14 million vehicles for an unintended key rotation issue which could move the ignition switch from the “run” position, causing the engine to turn off and airbags not to deploy in a crash. Within that group of vehicles is 2005-09 LaCrosse sedans and 2006-11 Buick Lucerne large cars. The fix, which includes installing two key rings and an insert in a key slot, has had a 74.9 percent completion rate as of June 2018, GM says.

A year later, GM called back 429,000-plus vehicles for faulty headlamp driver modules, which can cause the headlamps and daytime running lights to fail to illuminate. Within that recall are 2006-09 LaCrosse cars and 2006-07 Buick Rainier SUVs.

GM said the fix is replacing parts and the overall recall completion rate is 56.7 percent as of June 2018.

In 2016, General Motors also recalled 3.64 million vehicles for faulty airbag software that can prevent airbags from deploying in a crash. The defect was tied to at least one death and three injuries. Some vehicles in that recall were Buicks including 2014-17 Encore subcompact SUVs and 2014-16 LaCrosse models. The fix for most vehicles is a software reflash. GM said the recall completion rate is 89.9 percent as of June 2018 for the total vehicle population.

“No matter the recall completion rate, individual vehicles may still have open recalls requiring repairs,” GM said in a statement. “Shoppers should check the Vehicle Information (Identification) Numbers (VIN) for the specific vehicles they are considering on the NHTSA Recall website to determine if they require recall repairs and have any recall repairs done immediately. Dealers will repair recall at no cost to the owner.”
