BMW Recall History

Check your BMW’s Vehicle Identification Number or VIN at KBB’s Car Recalls above.

BMW has had several recalls over the past few years, the biggest dealing with child restraint seat anchors on its popular X3 and X4 vehicles. Other recalls also included some vehicles involved in the Takata airbag campaign.

In 2016, a recall over involved child restraint seats anchors that may have become damaged in use risked the injury of children. The affected vehicles include 2011-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, xDrive35i, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d and 2015-2017 X4 xDrive28i, X4 xDrive35i and X4 xDriveM40i. According to the NHTSA, the completion rate of the recall was 61.1 percent as of January 2018.

BMW recalled vehicles as part of the Takata airbag inflator recall including 2017 X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 xDrive 35d and X5 xDrive40e SUVs. Takata airbag inflators can explode and send shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The inflators should be replaced with new airbag modules. The NHTSA data shows that 91.6 percent of recalled vehicles has been fixed.

A recall in 2017 pertained to 2014-2017 i3 hybrid electric vehicles over the fuel tank vent link rubbing against a cable. This could cause a fuel vapor leak and a possible fire. The completion rate as of April 2018 was 93.8 percent of 19,130 vehicles. A total of 1.3 percent of those vehicles have been branded unreachable or removed from the road.

A seat belt recall applies to 2017 for 2018 BMW 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive and M4 convertible vehicles. On these cars, a locking mechanism was not vehicle speed-sensitive, meaning in the event of a crash, the seat belt would not hold back the occupant, putting them at bigger risk of injury.
